Sinn 140 St Pilot's Watch
Starting from 4.520 €The Sinn 140 St carries forward one of the most singular lineages in German watchmaking: that of an automatic chronograph that genuinely flew in orbit. Developed in Frankfurt am Main, it presents itself as a large-format pilot’s instrument watch, with a 44mm steel case hardened by TEGIMENT technology, an integrated rotating bezel and a matte black dial built entirely around legibility. Its engine, the in-house SINN SZ01 calibre, displays the chronograph minute at the centre, a feature that radically changes how short intervals are read. Offered in a bead-blasted steel version and a black TEGIMENT version, this 140 is aimed at enthusiasts of technical, aviation-inspired instrument watches built to withstand real use.
Sinn 140 St pilot’s watch
Sinn Spezialuhren builds its watches in Frankfurt am Main as working instruments rather than showcase pieces. The German house has built its reputation on concrete technical solutions, patented or developed in-house, each addressing a specific practical problem: condensation under the crystal, scratches on a steel case, a crown’s resistance to lateral impact. The 140 series holds a particular place in this history, as it is one of the few series-produced watches with a genuinely documented spaceflight past.
German physicist and astronaut Reinhard Furrer wore a 140 S during the Spacelab D1 mission aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1985. He had bought the watch himself from Sinn, specifically requesting a mechanical automatic-winding chronograph to test whether an oscillating mass could function in weightlessness. Seven years later, Klaus-Dietrich Flade wore a 142 S on the Mir-92 mission. The caseback of today’s versions recalls this episode with an inscription dedicated to the D1 Spacelab mission.
Today’s 140 carries this heritage forward without freezing it in place. It retains the direct-reading logic that made the historical models so strong, while drawing on an in-house calibre and the technological arsenal the brand has developed since the 2000s. A pilot’s watch through its bezel and dial, an instrument watch through its construction, it is aimed at those seeking an imposing, instantly recognisable piece designed for everyday use.

The Sinn 140 St pilot’s watch
The 140 St fully embraces its status as a large-format instrument. Its 44mm case and 15mm height give it an imposing presence on the wrist, tempered by a weight of 118 grams without a strap, which remains reasonable for an automatic chronograph of this size. The stainless steel is bead-blasted, which limits unwanted reflections and gives the case a consistent matte texture in keeping with the model’s utilitarian purpose. The dial follows the same logic. Matte black base, hour and minute hands and markers coated with luminescent material, chronograph indicators also treated: legibility remains possible in all lighting conditions.

The anti-reflective sapphire crystal on both faces completes this legibility work by eliminating the light haze that hinders quick reading in a cockpit or outdoors. The display architecture follows from the calibre: hour, minute, small seconds and date window, plus the chronograph minute placed at the centre. An integrated bidirectional rotating bezel fitted with a luminescent marker completes the set and is operated via a second crown at 10 o’clock, a classic solution on pilot’s watches that protects the bezel from accidental manipulation. This indirect control limits any accidental shifting of the scale during use, an important point for an instrument meant to remain reliable in all circumstances.
Two versions and a technical arsenal signed Sinn
The 140 comes in two executions. The 140 St, referenced 140.020, offers the bead-blasted steel case, priced at €4,520 in its base configuration with a bead-blasted steel pin buckle. The 140 St S, referenced 140.030 and priced at €4,720, receives a black scratch-resistant coating applied over a TEGIMENT base, along with a matching black buckle. The specifications and the matte black dial remain identical between versions: the choice comes down to appearance, raw steel or all-black. The technical heart is shared. The case surface is hardened by TEGIMENT technology, which treats the metal itself rather than coating it, for extreme scratch resistance; the screw-down, nickel-free caseback is not TEGIMENT-treated.

Added to this is Ar dehumidifying technology, which combines a desiccant capsule, reduced-diffusion gaskets and a protective gas to keep condensation at bay and slow the ageing of the oils. The capsule can be glimpsed through a small sapphire window set into the lug. The crown and pushers use the D3 system, fixed directly into the case. The case also complies with the DIN 8310 standard and resists low pressure, a rare qualification that reveals the model’s aeronautical orientation.
Sinn 140 St pilot’s watch: the minute at the centre
The Sinn 140 St combines a 44mm bead-blasted steel case hardened by TEGIMENT technology, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal on both faces and 10 bar water resistance compliant with the DIN 8310 standard. Its in-house SINN SZ01 calibre is an automatic chronograph with 28 jewels beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, fitted with stop seconds and protected against magnetic fields according to DIN ISO 764. Its distinctive feature is the chronograph minute displayed at the centre, which simplifies the reading of measured times. An integrated rotating bezel, Ar dehumidifying technology, D3 systems and a three-year warranty round out this pilot’s watch.
Movement
The 140 St beats to the rhythm of the SINN SZ01 calibre, an automatic-winding chronograph developed in-house in Frankfurt. It has 28 jewels and oscillates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, a rate that ensures good running stability. The stop seconds function allows precise time-setting, while protection against magnetic fields to the DIN ISO 764 standard shields the movement from electrified environments. Its signature remains the centrally displayed jumping chronograph minute, which makes reading elapsed durations immediate.
Diameter and materials
The case measures 44mm in diameter for a height of 15mm and weighs 118 grams without a strap. It is made of bead-blasted stainless steel treated with TEGIMENT, a surface hardening that guards against scratches; the 140 St S adds a black scratch-resistant coating on top. The screw-down caseback is nickel-free and not TEGIMENT-treated. The matte black dial is protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal on both faces, and the integrated rotating bezel carries a luminescent marker.
Water resistance
The 140 St offers 10 bar of water resistance, or 100 metres, with pressure resistance meeting the technical requirements of the DIN 8310 standard. The screw-down caseback contributes to this construction, as do the crown and pushers with the D3 system, fixed directly into the case. The watch also claims resistance to low pressure, a qualification consistent with its aeronautical use. Ar dehumidifying technology completes the setup by keeping condensation away from under the crystal.
Accessories
The watch has a lug width of 22mm and can be configured on the brand’s website. The base version comes with a bead-blasted stainless steel pin buckle, replaced on the 140 St S by a buckle with a black scratch-resistant coating. The strap itself is chosen at the time of order, between leather and an H-Link steel bracelet, the latter offered through authorised retailers. Sinn does not publish box contents details on its product page.
Warranty
Sinn Spezialuhren grants a 3-year manufacturer warranty covering material and manufacturing defects, applicable worldwide and running from the invoice date. The water resistance warranty, meanwhile, is limited to 24 months. This period covers all components of the movement and case, a commitment consistent with the watch’s professional purpose. It applies worldwide, which simplifies after-sales matters outside Germany.
