MIDO Ocean Star 39 Dive Wtach
Starting from 980 €The MIDO Ocean Star 39 is an automatic dive watch that introduces a new format to the Ocean Star collection. Presented by the brand as its most versatile Ocean Star, it suits time at sea as much as life on land, with a sporty, elegant look. Its textured dial, inspired by sea currents on sand, gives it an instantly recognisable identity. Beneath this intricate design beats the Caliber 72, a slim movement that delivers up to 72 hours of power reserve. Water resistant to 200 metres and offered in six versions from €980 to €1,320, this Swiss diver is aimed at fans of compact tool watches that move effortlessly from the water to the office.
MIDO Ocean Star 39 dive watch
MIDO is one of the Swiss watchmaking houses with a history spanning more than a century. Founded in 1918 and now part of the Swatch Group, the brand has built much of its reputation on mastering water resistance, a skill for which the starfish has become the emblem. The Ocean Star collection carries this heritage forward, bringing together the house's dive and sport watches.
It was in 2024, the collection's 80th anniversary year, that MIDO unveiled the Ocean Star 39. This is not a variation on an existing model, like the Ocean Star Tribute or the Ocean Star 200C, but a diver built around an entirely new format. Its 39 mm diameter, unprecedented in the collection, sets the tone: the brand presents it as its most versatile Ocean Star, equally at home at sea and on land. The launch featured three dials, blue, grey and champagne sand with gold accents, before the range expanded.
This compact format rests on a notable technical choice. Where most MIDO models use the Caliber 80, the Ocean Star 39 adopts the slimmer Caliber 72, which allows for a thinner case. The textured dial, evoking sea currents on sand, and the starfish engraved on the screw-down caseback tie the watch back to the collection's maritime imagery. The Ocean Star 39 thus presents itself as a modern diver faithful to its heritage, designed to be worn every day.

The MIDO Ocean Star 39 dive watch
The MIDO Ocean Star 39 takes the fundamentals of the classic diver and brings them back to measured proportions. Its round 39 mm case in 316L stainless steel comes with an average thickness of 10.5 mm, a slimness that is welcome in a dive watch. The 46 mm lug-to-lug length and the 20 mm lug width complete a footprint that suits a wide variety of wrists. The dial is the model's visual signature. Its textured surface, whose ripples recall sea currents on sand, plays with light and continues onto the two-tone bezel. Depending on the version, it takes on a colour gradient that further accentuates this sense of depth.

The hour markers, slightly recessed into this pattern, and the hands are coated with Super-LumiNova® to maintain good legibility in low light or underwater. A date window rounds out the display without cluttering the composition. In terms of use, the Ocean Star 39 ticks the essential boxes of a dive watch, with water resistance of 200 m / 20 bar and a screw-down crown. Yet it remains discreet enough to go with smart city wear. This is precisely the balance MIDO claims for this model: a versatile diver, equally capable of following a day at sea or a week at work, without ever looking oversized.
Caliber 72 and six versions for a versatile diver
At the heart of the Ocean Star 39 beats the Caliber 72, an automatic movement built on the ETA A31.111 base, itself derived from the ETA 2892. With its 21 jewels, 3.5 Hz frequency and 3.85 mm thickness, it is what allows the case to stay so slim. Its power reserve of up to 72 hours means it can sit unworn over a weekend, while the Nivachron™ hairspring, a titanium-based alloy, makes it less sensitive to magnetism. On the diving side, the unidirectional bezel with 120 clicks, the screw-down crown and the screw-down caseback engraved with a starfish form a consistent package with the stated water resistance.

The sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment preserves the dial's legibility, and all the straps, in 20 mm, are easy to swap out. The model comes in six versions. Three of them pair a 316L steel bracelet with a deployant clasp and diving extension with a blue gradient, grey gradient or champagne dial, the latter in a PVD-coated case, all priced at €1,190. Two versions with a black dial change character depending on their strap: black rubber with a PVD case at €1,260, or orange fabric, the most accessible at €980. Finally, the Special Edition with a blue dial, on steel, is delivered with an extra strap for €1,320.
MIDO Ocean Star 39 dive watch: the versatile diver
The MIDO Ocean Star 39 brings together, in a 316L stainless steel case measuring 39 mm and 10.5 mm thick, the essential attributes of a dive watch: 200 m / 20 bar water resistance, screw-down crown, screw-down caseback and unidirectional bezel. Its automatic Caliber 72 offers a power reserve of up to 72 hours and a Nivachron™ hairspring that is less sensitive to magnetism. The textured dial, protected by a sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment, carries Super-LumiNova® hour markers and hands. Offered in six versions, on steel, rubber or fabric, it is covered by a two-year international warranty.
Movement
The Ocean Star 39 is powered by the Caliber 72, an automatic movement built on the ETA A31.111 base, itself derived from the ETA 2892. Fitted with 21 jewels, it beats at a frequency of 3.5 Hz. It replaces the Caliber 80 found in most MIDO models here, allowing the case to be slimmed down. Its power reserve of up to 72 hours means it can sit unworn over a weekend without winding, while the Nivachron™ hairspring, a titanium-based alloy, makes it less sensitive to magnetism. It displays the hours and the date.
Diameter and materials
The round 39 mm case is made of 316L stainless steel, paired with a PVD coating on the champagne-dial version and on the black rubber version. It stands at an average thickness of 10.5 mm, with a 20 mm lug width and a 46 mm lug-to-lug length. The sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment protects a textured dial available in blue gradient, grey gradient, champagne, black or blue. The two-tone bezel with aluminium insert echoes the dial's pattern.
Water resistance
The Ocean Star 39 offers water resistance of 200 m / 20 bar, ensured by a screw-down crown and a screw-down caseback engraved with a starfish, the emblem of MIDO's historic expertise in this area. The unidirectional bezel with 120 clicks completes the diver's equipment. Super-LumiNova®-treated hour markers and hands preserve legibility in the dark. Designed for both sea and land, this diver combines solid protection against water with a profile slim enough to slip under a cuff.
Accessories
Depending on the version, the Ocean Star 39 is fitted with a 316L stainless steel bracelet, a black rubber strap or an orange fabric strap with a synthetic lining. The steel bracelet closes with a deployant clasp with diving extension, featuring a safety lock and double pusher, allowing the watch to be worn over a wetsuit. Rubber and fabric straps use a standard buckle. All straps, in 20 mm, are easy to swap out. The Special Edition comes with an extra strap, and a warranty card is supplied with every watch.
Warranty
The Ocean Star 39 is covered by a 2-year international warranty, the same across all six versions of the model, from the fabric strap to the Special Edition. Its international nature means this cover can be claimed outside the country of purchase. A warranty card is supplied with the watch: it is worth keeping it safe, as it serves as proof of purchase. For a diver meant to move from the water to the city, regular checks on water resistance remain a good maintenance habit.
