Longines Spirit Pilot Watch

Starting from 2.600 €

The Longines Spirit Pilot is an automatic aviator's watch that condenses the Swiss house's aeronautical heritage into a particularly well-balanced 39 mm steel case. The most pared-back version of the Spirit collection, it drops the date window in favour of a two-level matte black dial animated by applied Arabic numerals and gilt-toned hands. Its COSC-certified chronometer automatic movement, fitted with a monocrystalline silicon balance spring and 72 hours of power reserve, sits well above the average for its category. Offered in three versions, on a steel bracelet, brown leather or green rubber strap, it suits fans of versatile pilot's watches, equally at home worn daily or while travelling.

Longines Spirit Pilot aviator's watch

Longines maintains a long and well-documented relationship with aviation. The Swiss brand claims nearly a century in the skies, alongside the pioneers of transatlantic flights and the explorers who set off for the polar regions carrying its timekeeping instruments. It is also to Longines that we owe the flyback chronograph, patented in the mid-1930s.

This heritage gave rise in 2020 to the Spirit collection, conceived as a contemporary reinterpretation of the aviator's watch rather than a literal reissue. Five years after the line's launch, the Spirit Pilot offers a more understated take on it, unveiled on 2 October 2025 alongside the Spirit Pilot Flyback. The case has been redesigned to 39 mm, thickness and lug-to-lug length reduced, and the six-screw caseback replaced by a screw-down one. The dial loses its date window, its Automatic wording and its five-star logo, replaced by the inscription Chronometer Officially Certified.

The minute scale, simplified into a railroad track, contributes to this pursuit of clarity. The result is a pilot's watch that fully embraces its primary function: telling the time quickly and clearly. It appeals as much to the watch enthusiast drawn to chronometer certification as to the aviation fan looking for a sober, Swiss piece that can be worn in any circumstance, from the office to the cockpit.

The Longines Spirit Pilot aviator's watch

The Spirit Pilot offers the most understated reading of the Spirit line. The brushed and polished steel case comes down to a 39 mm diameter and 11.5 mm thickness, with a lug-to-lug length of 47.20 mm that keeps the watch well centred on the wrist. The two-level matte black dial drops the date window: what remains are three hands, applied Arabic numerals and a simplified railroad minute scale, in keeping with the logic of aviation dials where every element must serve legibility. The gilt-toned text and hands lend a vintage nuance the original, silver-toned Spirit did not have.

The five-star logo gives way to the words Chronometer Officially Certified, a reminder of the COSC chronometer certification earned by the movement. Swiss Super-LumiNova® ensures legibility in the dark, while the sapphire crystal treated with anti-reflective coating on both faces limits unwanted glare, whether in the cockpit or under direct sunlight. With water resistance of 100 m / 10 bar and a screw-down crown, the watch handles rain, showers and swimming without particular caution. This is a versatile pilot's watch, designed for everyday wear rather than pure instrumentation, whose moderate size suits a wide range of wrists, including slimmer ones.

Three versions built around a single dial

The choice is limited to three references, all built on the same matte black dial. The steel bracelet version (L3.809.4.53.6) is the most complete and the most expensive, at 2,950 €. The brown leather strap version (L3.809.4.53.2) drops to 2,700 € and plays a more classic card. Finally, the version on a textile-look green rubber strap (L3.809.4.53.9) opens the range at 2,600 € with a distinctly more military tone. Steel and leather share a folding clasp with double security and micro-adjustment, very useful for compensating variations in wrist size, while the rubber strap makes do with a pin buckle.

Since the straps are interchangeable, nothing stops owners from building up a small collection of bands around a single case. Beneath the screw-down caseback, the L888.4 calibre supplies the model's technical argument, with up to 72 hours of power reserve, a monocrystalline silicon balance spring and magnetic resistance said to be ten times greater than the ISO 764 standard. At this price point, the combination of a chronometer-certified movement, a compact size and a 5-year warranty forms a coherent proposition. The more attentive will regret the steel bracelet's end links, which visually lengthen the case, and the lack of a date for everyday use.

Longines Spirit Pilot aviator's watch: COSC-certified precision

The Longines Spirit Pilot combines a 39 mm steel case, a thickness of 11.5 mm and a two-level matte black dial, without a date, whose applied Arabic numerals and gilt hands ensure instant legibility. The automatic L888.4 calibre, COSC chronometer certified, oscillates at 25,200 vibrations per hour, features a monocrystalline silicon balance spring and offers up to 72 hours of power reserve. The sapphire crystal receives anti-reflective treatment on both faces, water resistance reaches 100 metres and the crown is screw-down. Three versions coexist, steel bracelet, brown leather or green rubber, with a five-year warranty.

01

Movement

The Spirit Pilot is powered by the exclusive L888.4 calibre, an automatic mechanical movement that oscillates at 25,200 vibrations per hour. It features a monocrystalline silicon balance spring, a guarantee of stability against magnetic fields, and delivers a power reserve of up to 72 hours. The whole receives COSC chronometer certification, a guarantee of controlled timekeeping in several positions. The configuration remains deliberately pared back: three hands, no date window, in the spirit of aviation dials that are legible at a glance, with no superfluous indication.

Diameter and materials

The brushed and polished steel case measures 39 mm in diameter for 11.5 mm in thickness, with a 20 mm lug width and a lug-to-lug length of 47.20 mm that make the watch easy to wear day to day. The sapphire crystal treated with anti-reflective coating on both faces protects a matte black dial with two levels, adorned with applied Arabic numerals and gilt-toned hands. Only one dial colour appears in the catalogue, but three different outfits depending on the version chosen.

03

Water resistance

Rated water-resistant to 100 m / 10 bar, the Spirit Pilot copes with swimming and everyday use without concern, while remaining an aviator's watch rather than a diver. Water resistance relies on a screw-down crown and a screw-down caseback, which here replaces the six-screw caseback of the three-hand Spirit. Night-time legibility is ensured by Swiss Super-LumiNova® applied to the dial, a logical complement to the anti-reflective treatment deposited on both faces of the sapphire.

Accessories

Three outfits are offered. The steel bracelet and the brown leather strap receive a folding clasp with double security and micro-adjustment, valuable for fine-tuning fit on the wrist according to the season. The textile-look green rubber strap, for its part, adopts a simpler pin buckle. The straps are interchangeable, which makes it easy to change the character of the watch. Longines does not detail the box contents on its product page, but an instruction manual remains available for download online.

Warranty

Longines covers the Spirit Pilot with a 5-year warranty, a duration longer than the industry standard and one the brand links directly to the use of the silicon balance spring in its calibre. This duration illustrates the confidence placed in the L888.4 movement and its COSC chronometer certification. As always, a manufacturer's warranty covers manufacturing defects and not normal wear, shocks or work carried out outside the authorised network, which makes going through an official service centre advisable for any intervention on the watch.
