Longines Legend Diver 39 mm Watch
Starting from 3.400 €The Longines Legend Diver 39 mm is a dive watch from the Heritage collection that revives one of the most distinctive divers of the late 1950s. Recognisable by its two crowns and internal rotating bezel, it reproduces the design of a 1959 model built for underwater exploration. This date-free version offers a more compact size than the 42 mm, while retaining 300 metres of water resistance. A COSC-certified chronometer compliant with ISO 6425, it comes in ten dial and strap versions, from €3,400 to €3,750. It is aimed at fans of vintage dive watches looking for a serious tool watch that is easy to wear day to day.
Longines Legend Diver 39 mm dive watch
Longines did not wait for dive watches to become popular before turning its attention to water resistance. As early as 1937, the brand presented the first chronograph with waterproof pushers, patented the following year. In 1958 it produced its first dive watch, then unveiled in 1959 a model designed for underwater exploration, housed in a Super Compressor type case. In this type of construction, the gasket compresses under water pressure.
That model already stood out for its two screw-down crowns and internal rotating bezel, an arrangement Longines presents as its own invention. Placed inside the case, the diving scale is shielded from knocks and accidental handling that could alter its setting, a decisive advantage for anyone relying on their instrument underwater.
The current Legend Diver takes this design directly from the 7042 reference of 1959. In November 2023, Longines expanded the family with a 39 mm version, slotted between the 42 mm Legend Diver and a more feminine 36 mm model. At launch it comprised four references, with black or blue dials, on steel, leather or NATO straps. Part of the Heritage collection, it now sits alongside the Legend Diver 59, a bronze version and a black PVD version. More than a simple reissue, this 39 mm model carries forward the spirit of the original: a sober, legible tool watch with proportions tailored for everyday wear.

The Longines Legend Diver 39 mm dive watch
The Longines Legend Diver 39 mm keeps the silhouette that made its name: two crowns on the case band and an internal rotating diving bezel housed inside the case. The diving scale thus frames the dial directly, giving the watch an instantly recognisable look, somewhere between a professional instrument and a vintage piece. The division of roles is simple: the lower crown sets the time, the upper one turns the bezel to measure a dive time. This principle, inherited from the 1959 model, remains at the heart of its identity.

This version stands out above all for its proportions. Redesigned for the occasion, the brushed and polished steel case measures 39 mm in diameter for 12.7 mm thick, and its 47 mm lug-to-lug replaces the 52.4 mm of the previous design. The gain is noticeable on the wrist: the watch becomes easier to wear, even on a slim wrist, without losing any of its presence. The domed sapphire crystal, treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides, accentuates the overall retro character. On the back, the solid caseback stamped with a diver has also been revised: the motif is now always correctly oriented, a careful detail reflecting the attention paid to this reissue. The result is a diver with unmistakably vintage character, designed to suit a day at sea just as well as a day at the office.
A chronometer diver available in ten versions
Beneath this solid caseback beats the L888.6 calibre, an automatic movement exclusive to Longines. COSC-certified as a chronometer, it runs at 25,200 vibrations per hour and relies on a silicon hairspring. In daily use, its main strength is its 72-hour power reserve: the watch can sit from Friday evening to Monday morning without stopping. The movement stays hidden, but its performance speaks for itself. On the diving side, it offers 300 metres of water resistance, secured in particular by a screw-down crown, and meets the ISO 6425 standard governing dive watches.

Legibility benefits from a clean dial, free of a date window, and from Swiss Super-LumiNova®. The hands have been reworked: the arrow-shaped hour hand is now fully luminous, improving readability in low light. The range comprises ten versions. The dial can be chosen in polished lacquered black, blue or green, or in grey, terracotta and matte white. The six colours are offered on a steel bracelet at €3,750, with a double-security deployant clasp featuring micro-adjustment. Black, blue and green are also available on a matching rubber strap, and black on brown leather, at €3,400. From one version to another, only the dial and strap change: the case, movement and performance remain identical.
Longines Legend Diver 39 mm dive watch: compact and certified
The Longines Legend Diver 39 mm combines a 39 mm steel case 12.7 mm thick, an internal rotating diving bezel controlled by a second crown, and 300 metres of water resistance. It is powered by the automatic L888.6 calibre, a COSC-certified chronometer with a silicon hairspring, offering 72 hours of power reserve. Compliant with the ISO 6425 standard, it comes in ten versions on steel, rubber or brown leather straps, from €3,400 to €3,750, with a 5-year Longines warranty. A diver with a historic design, built for everyday use.
Movement
The Legend Diver 39 mm is fitted with the automatic L888.6 calibre, a movement exclusive to Longines measuring 25.6 mm in diameter and running on 21 jewels. It oscillates at 25,200 vibrations per hour and features a silicon hairspring. Its 72-hour power reserve clearly exceeds the 60 hours of the L888.5 found in the 42 mm Legend Diver with date. This movement is also a COSC-certified chronometer, a welcome mark of precision on a tool watch meant for everyday use.
Diameter and materials
The brushed and polished steel case measures 39 mm in diameter, 12.7 mm thick, with a 47 mm lug-to-lug. The domed sapphire crystal receives an anti-reflective treatment on both sides, while the solid caseback is stamped with a diver. The dial comes in polished lacquered black, blue or green, as well as grey, terracotta or matte white, with these last three shades reserved for the steel bracelet. The diving scale is carried on an internal rotating bezel.
Water resistance
Water-resistant to 300 m / 30 bar, the Legend Diver 39 mm meets the ISO 6425 standard for dive watches. The screw-down crown helps protect the movement, and the rotating bezel, placed inside the case, is shielded from knocks and accidental handling that could alter its setting. The dial uses Swiss Super-LumiNova®, and the arrow-shaped hour hand is now fully luminous for clear reading in the dark.
Accessories
The Legend Diver 39 mm is worn on three types of strap depending on the version. The steel bracelet is fitted with a double-security deployant clasp with a micro-adjustment system, handy for fine-tuning the fit. The black, blue or green rubber versions and the brown leather version use a pin buckle. Each rubber strap matches its dial colour, while the brown leather pairs with the black dial. These versions are priced at €3,400, against €3,750 for steel.
Warranty
The Longines Legend Diver 39 mm comes with a 5-year Longines warranty, a reassuring duration for a mechanical watch intended for regular use, including in water. This coverage applies to all ten versions of the model, whether fitted on steel, rubber or leather. It offers welcome peace of mind on a watch at this price point. To preserve the long-term water resistance of this diver, periodic checks at an authorised service centre remain recommended, especially before any dive.
