Starting from 3.150 €

The U-BOAT Sommerso Ceramic 46 mm is an Italian dive watch that pushes the Tuscan house's visual codes to the extreme. Its 46 mm steel case, its crown placed on the left under a patented crown guard, and its dial built on three stacked levels make it instantly recognisable on the wrist. Water resistant to 300 metres, driven by a customised Swiss automatic movement and topped with a unidirectional rotating bezel with a ceramic insert, it embraces an imposing size in the service of maximum legibility. Offered in six references spread across three colourways and two strap types, it is aimed at fans of expressive dive watches, those seeking a diver with character rather than a discreet classic.

U-BOAT Sommerso Ceramic 46 mm dive watch

U-BOAT is an Italian brand based in Gragnano, near Lucca, in Tuscany. Its history goes back to 1942, when the Italian Navy commissioned Ilvo Fontana to produce wristwatches for its pilots, under strict requirements for legibility and water resistance. The drawings remained forgotten for decades, until Italo Fontana, Ilvo's grandson, rediscovered them in 2000 and used them as the basis for the first U-BOAT watch, under the motto “A New Dimension in Time”.

Since then, every model has been designed by Italo Fontana and assembled in Lucca, with the brand proudly claiming its Made in Tuscany status and a presence in more than sixty markets. The house signature rests first on that large crown placed on the left side of the case, protected by a patented locking device, a direct legacy of the 1942 design. On the Sommerso, this is joined by an engraved serial number plate fixed to the left flank and a steel caseback held by seven external screws.

The Sommerso is the dive line of the catalogue, classified as such by the brand, with a graduated unidirectional rotating bezel and a 24-hour indicator. The Ceramic version, launched in July 2023, adds to this base a ceramic bezel insert and a two-tone graduated dial built on three stacked levels, with a visible ruby at 6 o'clock. It sits above the Sommerso/A 46 mm and the Sommerso DLC in the official hierarchy, and today represents U-BOAT's most accomplished interpretation of the diver.

The U-BOAT Sommerso Ceramic dive watch

The Sommerso Ceramic makes its size known from the outset: a 46 mm case in hand-satin-finished AISI 316L stainless steel, roughly 17 mm thick, whose massive silhouette faithfully conveys the spirit of the Tuscan house. The crown, positioned on the left flank of the case, is protected by a patented device that locks it and shields it from impacts, while an engraved serial number plate is fixed to that same flank. The steel caseback, held by seven external screws, completes a deliberately demonstrative construction, designed to withstand the most intensive use. This construction, combined with the screw-down crown, contributes to the watch's claimed 300-metre water resistance.

The dial is the other showpiece of this version. It consists of three stacked dials whose layering creates genuine reading depth, with a visible ruby left exposed and numerals ringed in brushed metal. The numerals and hour markers receive a white Super-LumiNova treatment, complemented by a red 24-hour indicator hand that stands out against the rest of the dial. The anti-reflective treated sapphire crystal incorporates a cyclops lens above the date window, a detail that makes reading the date easier despite the layered dial levels. The graduated unidirectional rotating bezel, with its ceramic insert, completes the diving equipment and allows immersion time to be tracked at a glance.

Six references for three dial colourways

The Sommerso Ceramic is offered in six references built around three colourways. The blue and black two-tone dial corresponds to refs. 9519 and 9519/MT, the green and black two-tone dial to refs. 9520 and 9520/MT, and the burgundy and black two-tone dial to refs. 9521 and 9521/MT. On the blue and green versions, the ceramic bezel insert is two-tone and matches the dial's shade; the burgundy version instead receives an entirely black insert, a choice that gives it a darker, more understated contrast. Each colourway can then be chosen with two strap configurations. The black vulcanised rubber strap, referenced 8351/Z, closed with a steel pin buckle referenced 5466/SCREW, corresponds to the references without a suffix, priced at €3,150.

The 316L steel bracelet, referenced 8349, with screwed links and fitted with a deployant buckle, identifies the references with the /MT suffix, offered at €3,350. Both configurations share the same 22/20 mm width. On the mechanical side, all versions share the same customised Sellita SW 200 calibre and the same 300-metre water resistance, so the choice comes down purely to appearance and wrist comfort. Whichever reference is chosen, the warranty applied by U-BOAT remains the same: two years, extendable by twelve months, with straps not covered, a useful detail for anyone planning intensive wrist use.

U-BOAT Sommerso Ceramic 46 mm dive watch: Tuscan style underwater

The Sommerso Ceramic brings together everything that defines U-BOAT's identity: a hand-satin-finished 316L steel case measuring 46 mm, a left-side crown protected by a patented device, a caseback secured by seven screws, and a serial number plate on the flank. Its three-tier stacked dial, visible ruby and white luminescence ensure spectacular legibility, backed by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal with a date cyclops. The unidirectional rotating bezel with ceramic insert and the 300-metre water resistance firmly place it in the diving world. The customised Swiss automatic Sellita SW 200 movement offers 41 hours of power reserve, available on rubber or steel depending on the reference.

01

Movement

The Sommerso Ceramic is driven by a customised Swiss mechanical automatic movement built to the house's specifications, the Sellita SW 200 calibre. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz, a rate that ensures good timekeeping regularity and a smooth seconds hand. Its architecture features 26 jewels and it offers a 41-hour power reserve. The skeletonised rotor reflects the customisation work carried out by U-BOAT. Functions cover hours, minutes, seconds, date and a 24-hour indicator.

Diameter and materials

The case measures 46 mm in diameter for a thickness of around 17 mm, an unapologetically voluminous format. It is machined from hand-satin-finished AISI 316L stainless steel, with a left-side crown under a patented crown guard and a serial number plate on the left flank. The unidirectional rotating bezel with ceramic insert is two-tone on the blue and green versions, entirely black on the burgundy. The anti-reflective treated sapphire crystal features a cyclops lens over the date window, above a three-tier stacked dial.

03

Water resistance

The Sommerso Ceramic claims a water resistance of 300 m / 30 ATM, a level that firmly places it in the dive watch category and allows for regular underwater use. This resistance relies on a screw-down crown locked by its patented protective device and on a steel caseback closed by seven external screws. The graduated unidirectional rotating bezel allows immersion time to be tracked, its markings executed in white Super-LumiNova on the ceramic insert to remain legible in dark water.

Accessories

Two strap configurations are offered depending on the chosen reference. The 316L steel bracelet, referenced 8349, with screwed links, closes with a deployant buckle. The alternative is a black vulcanised rubber strap, referenced 8351/Z, paired with a steel pin buckle referenced 5466/SCREW. Both adopt a 22/20 mm width, which makes later switching between the two configurations easier. The steel bracelet version, priced at €3,350, differs from the rubber version, priced at €3,150, solely in this choice of material and clasp.

05

Warranty

U-BOAT covers the Sommerso Ceramic with a 2-year warranty, extendable by 12 months under the conditions published by the brand. This coverage applies to the watch itself: straps are not covered, which remains common on sports pieces where rubber and links undergo wear from use. For a diver worn regularly in water, it is recommended to have the seals and crown locking checked periodically by an authorised dealer.
