Bell & Ross BR-03 Space Mission: a watch inspired by space exploration
With the BR-03 Space Mission, Bell & Ross continues its exploration of the world of aviation, this time turning its attention to space. Limited to 999 pieces, this edition retains the iconic square case of the BR-03 collection but replaces the traditional two-hand display with an animated representation of the Earth, the Moon and a spaceplane. Featuring a 41 mm black ceramic case and an automatic mechanical movement, this watch offers a distinctive visual interpretation of time, somewhere between an aviation instrument and a contemporary timepiece. It is available from €4,990.
Bell & Ross BR-03 Space Mission: from aviation to space
Since its beginnings, Bell & Ross has developed a watchmaking identity closely associated with professional instruments, particularly those used in aviation. The BR-03 collection is one of the most recognisable expressions of this approach. Its square case, housing a circular dial, draws on the aesthetic principles of instruments found on aircraft dashboards. With the BR-03 Space Mission, the French brand retains this architecture while radically changing the way time is displayed. The dial no longer seeks to reproduce a conventional navigation instrument. Instead, it depicts a space scene in which various moving elements indicate the time. This approach brings the watch closer to a conceptual horological creation, although its construction retains several characteristics commonly associated with professionally inspired timepieces. The BR-03 Space Mission therefore continues Bell & Ross's exploration of unconventional dial designs, following models such as the BR-03 Astro, which was also inspired by the world of space exploration.
A space-themed dial featuring the Earth, the Moon and a spacecraft
The distinctive feature of the Bell & Ross BR-03 Space Mission lies in its display system. Unlike a traditional watch, it does not feature two conventional central hands. Instead, the hours and minutes are indicated by elements moving across a background evoking outer space.
A black aventurine dial
The dial features a black aventurine plate whose shimmering appearance evokes a star-filled sky. This material adds depth to the composition. The elements representing the Earth, the Moon and the spacecraft appear to move against a dark background. The entire scene is framed by the characteristic square case of the BR-03. This presentation transforms timekeeping into a miniature animated scene, whose appearance continuously changes as the movement operates.
The Moon indicates the hours
The hours are displayed using a transparent disc that completes one full rotation every twelve hours. This disc features representations of the Earth and the Moon. The position of the Moon indicates the hours, replacing the traditional hour hand. As the disc rotates, it gradually animates the composition while retaining the principle of a twelve-hour display.
A spacecraft to indicate the minutes
The minutes are indicated by a miniature spacecraft. It completes a rotation around the dial, with its position showing the minutes. This representation replaces the conventional minute hand. The choice of a spacecraft creates a visual connection between Bell & Ross's historical aviation heritage and the technologies of space exploration. However, reading the time requires some familiarity with these unusual indicators.
The BR-03 Space Mission therefore prioritises a distinctive visual experience over the immediate, conventional readability of an instrument watch.
A 41 mm square case in black ceramic
Despite its unusual dial, the BR-03 Space Mission retains the overall proportions and design of the BR-03 collection. The case measures 41 mm in width and 10.60 mm in thickness. It is made from microblasted black ceramic, with a matte finish that reinforces its technical appearance. Ceramic offers good scratch resistance under normal conditions of use, although it can still be damaged by significant impacts. The sapphire crystal features an anti-reflective coating designed to improve dial visibility. The watch also offers water resistance to 100 metres. This makes it suitable for water-based activities compatible with its water-resistance rating, without making it a dedicated diving watch. The design remains faithful to the principles that have made Bell & Ross recognisable: combining simple geometry, technical materials and inspiration drawn from professional instruments.
The BR-CAL.325 automatic calibre
The Bell & Ross BR-03 Space Mission is powered by the BR-CAL.325 calibre, a self-winding mechanical movement. It offers a stated power reserve of 54 hours. The movement performs two functions: displaying the hours and minutes. The watch's originality therefore lies not in the number of horological complications, but in the way time is displayed. The hour disc and the spacecraft indicating the minutes provide a visual interpretation of the mechanical movement's operation. This construction allows Bell & Ross to create a watch in which the animated dial takes centre stage.

An aviation-inspired watch, but not a military timepiece
The BR-03 Space Mission has an obvious connection to aviation through its case design and Bell & Ross's historical identity. However, it is important to distinguish this aesthetic inspiration from a genuine military purpose. Watches designed to meet operational specifications generally prioritise characteristics such as immediate legibility, robustness, ease of use and suitability for specific missions. The BR-03 Space Mission takes a different approach. Its animated display, space-themed design and limited production make it more closely associated with a watch intended for enthusiasts of horology and aviation-inspired design. It should therefore not be presented as a military-issued watch or as an instrument officially used by military pilots. This distinction does not diminish its horological appeal. It simply places the model in its proper context: that of a contemporary collection inspired by aviation instrumentation.
A limited edition of 999 pieces
Bell & Ross offers the BR-03 Space Mission in a limited edition of 999 pieces. This places the model in a category of watches produced in defined quantities, whose appeal lies partly in their distinctive aesthetic identity. The brand announces an official retail price of €4,990. At this price point, the BR-03 Space Mission is primarily aimed at Bell & Ross enthusiasts, collectors of watches with unconventional displays and those passionate about aviation or space exploration. The model comes with a black rubber strap and a second strap made from black synthetic fabric. Both options preserve the watch's technical aesthetic while offering different possibilities for everyday wear. Limited production is part of the model's commercial positioning, but it does not, in itself, indicate how its value might develop on the collectors' market.
What is the difference between the BR-03 Space Mission and the BR-03 Astro?
The BR-03 Space Mission continues an approach already explored by Bell & Ross with the BR-03 Astro. Both models share a space-inspired design and the principle of displaying time through moving graphical elements. However, the Space Mission introduces a distinctive composition in which a spacecraft indicates the minutes while the Moon serves as the hour marker. Its black aventurine dial also enhances the impression of depth and evokes a cosmic environment. This new interpretation illustrates Bell & Ross's intention to use the BR-03 collection as a creative platform, capable of accommodating very different watches while retaining an instantly recognisable silhouette.
Bell & Ross BR-03 Space Mission: a different way of reading time
With the BR-03 Space Mission, Bell & Ross moves away from the traditional presentation of pilot watches to explore a more graphical dimension of watchmaking. The square black ceramic case, BR-CAL.325 automatic calibre and 100-metre water resistance form the technical foundation of this creation. However, it is the animated dial that truly defines its identity: the Moon indicates the hours, while a spacecraft marks the passing minutes against a black aventurine background. Limited to 999 pieces and priced at €4,990, this watch belongs to a category of contemporary timepieces with a distinctive visual identity. It reflects the evolution of Bell & Ross, whose references to cockpit instruments now also serve as a starting point for creations inspired by space exploration.
