Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical America 250: a discreet tribute to American military history
Hamilton continues its exploration of its rich military heritage with a special edition of the Khaki Field Mechanical 36 mm, developed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. Unofficially dubbed the America 250, this watch doesn't seek to amplify patriotic styling. Instead, it draws inspiration from an extremely rare model produced for the US Air Force in the early 1970s, faithfully reproducing its key aesthetic and technical features. For military watch enthusiasts, this new release is first and foremost a historical reinterpretation. True to the DNA of the Khaki Field collection, it prioritizes functionality, legibility, and understated elegance, while incorporating several technical advancements adapted to contemporary standards. It is available for around €675.
Inspired by the US Air Force: Khaki Field Mechanical Military Watch
The new Khaki Field Mechanical is based on the FAPD 5101 Type 1, a navigation watch issued to select US Air Force crews around 1970. This model remains one of the rarest Hamilton military watches on the vintage market. Produced for a very limited time, it was designed for military air navigators and met specific functional requirements: excellent legibility, low light reflection, and robustness. Hamilton has recreated almost all the features that made this historical reference so renowned.
A 36mm Case Faithful to the Original
At a time when many military watches are well over 40mm, Hamilton has chosen to return to the original diameter. The steel case measures 36mm in diameter and approximately 10.2mm in thickness, dimensions close to the original watch. This size greatly contributes to the model's authentic character and will appeal to enthusiasts of vintage proportions. The case features a matte finish reminiscent of the Parkerized look of military watches from that era, although the treatment used today differs from the processes employed in the 1970s.
A design true to tool watches
The philosophy remains unchanged: each element serves a specific function. The black dial features:
- Large Arabic numerals;
- A 24-hour inner scale;
- A highly legible peripheral minute track;
- Military-style hands;
- Super-LumiNova Grade X2 coating for enhanced nighttime readability.
Unlike the original military models, the Hamilton logo appears naturally on the dial, in accordance with current civilian watch standards.
A bold acrylic crystal
Hamilton makes an interesting choice by retaining a domed acrylic crystal. While sapphire now dominates watch production, this material directly contributes to the authenticity of this reissue. The crystal, however, benefits from a modern treatment that improves its durability and minimizes wear.
A hand-wound mechanical movement
The Khaki Field Mechanical retains one of the most prized features among purists: manual winding. It houses the Hamilton H-50 caliber, a modern evolution of an ETA base, offering a power reserve of approximately 80 hours. This movement beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and incorporates a modern balance spring, while remaining true to the spirit of traditional military watches, where simplicity and reliability took precedence over sophistication.
A true field watch
Despite its historical inspiration, this Khaki Field meets today's requirements. It notably offers:
- Water resistance to 100 meters;
- An engraved screw-down case back;
- A robust construction suitable for everyday wear.
Hamilton also adds a dust cover protecting the movement, a further nod to the original military model.
Special features for this edition
This commemorative version includes several exclusive features. It comes with:
- A khaki cotton NATO strap;
- A second strap in aged brown leather;
- A military-inspired carrying case;
- An engraved case back commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
These accessories enhance the collectability of this edition without altering the watch's overall design.
Limited production
Hamilton specifies that this Khaki Field will be produced only during 2026, to coincide with the 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States Declaration of Independence. Certain versions intended for the American market are further limited to 1,776 numbered pieces, a direct reference to the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. This limited production naturally increases its appeal to collectors.
A special place in the Khaki collection
For several decades, the Khaki Field range has held a central place at Hamilton. It draws direct inspiration from the numerous military watches produced by the American manufacturer during the 20th century. With this America 250 edition, Hamilton isn't trying to modernize its historic design, but rather to faithfully recreate it. The result is aimed primarily at enthusiasts of military watches, who appreciate historical details more than fleeting trends.
In short, about the Khaki Field Mechanical America 250 military watch
With this Khaki Field Mechanical America 250, Hamilton once again demonstrates its mastery of historical reissues. Far from ostentatious commemorative editions, this watch prioritizes historical accuracy and technical consistency. Its modest 36mm diameter, hand-wound mechanical movement, acrylic crystal, khaki NATO strap, and aesthetics directly inherited from the FAPD 5101 make it a particularly appealing option for military watch enthusiasts. Without revolutionizing the Khaki Field collection, this special edition underscores the importance of Hamilton's military heritage in the history of American watchmaking and confirms the growing interest among collectors for faithful reinterpretations of iconic timepieces from the past.
