Seiko Jaws 50th anniversary: a horological tribute!
A shark, a few instantly recognizable notes, and a beach whose apparent tranquility doesn't last long. Fifty years after its release, Jaws remains one of the most identifiable films in cinematic history. To celebrate this anniversary, Seiko has chosen a medium particularly consistent with the film's universe: the dive watch. The Seiko Prospex SRPL81 Jaws 50th Anniversary Limited Edition incorporates several visual references to Steven Spielberg's film while retaining the characteristics of a true Prospex dive watch: automatic movement, unidirectional bezel, screw-down crown, and water resistance to 200 meters. The series is limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide. It is available starting at €700.
1975: when a shark changed popular cinema
Released in 1975 and adapted from Peter Benchley's novel, Jaws tells the story of the appearance of a great white shark off the coast of the fictional resort town of Amity Island. As the attacks multiply, Police Chief Martin Brody, played by Roy Scheider, finally sets sail with oceanographer Matt Hooper and shark hunter Quint. The film was directed by a then-young Steven Spielberg. The shoot encountered difficulties related to the operation of the mechanical sharks used in the film. This constraint paradoxically contributed to defining its cinematic language: the predator is often suggested rather than shown directly, notably through framing, editing, and John Williams' score. The Academy still emphasizes today the influence of these directing techniques on the film's effectiveness. This visual economy largely contributes to the tension of Jaws. The viewer knows that something lies beneath the surface without necessarily being able to see it. It is precisely this idea that Seiko adopted for the dial of its anniversary watch.
Jaws: the birth of the summer blockbuster
The importance of Jaws extends far beyond its screenplay. The film is regularly considered the first major modern summer blockbuster. Its launch was supported by a particularly extensive advertising campaign for the time, especially on television, and a release that helped change how Hollywood approached the release of its high-potential productions. The commercial success was considerable. The Library of Congress indicates that the film generated over $260 million during its initial run in the United States, becoming the highest-grossing film in American box office history. The cultural impact is just as lasting. The poster depicting a swimmer on the surface as a gigantic shark rises toward her has become one of the most recognizable images in popular cinema. It has since been reused, repurposed, and parodied countless times. In 2001, Jaws was also added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress due to its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
A shark hidden in the dial
For its Prospex Jaws 50th Anniversary, Seiko deliberately chose not to reproduce the famous poster directly on the dial. Instead, the brand adopted the principle of suggestion used by Spielberg. The dial features a gradient evoking the ocean's surface and incorporates a raised pattern. Hidden within this pattern is the silhouette of a shark, which appears differently depending on the angle of the light. A more direct reference appears at 6 o'clock with the red inscription JAWS, the film's original title. This combination allows the watch to maintain the overall appearance of a Seiko diver's watch while subtly integrating cinematic references into the details. The connection to the film is obvious to those familiar with the collaboration, but the dial doesn't simply become a miniature reproduction of the poster.
A silhouette rooted in Seiko's dive watch history
The choice of this design isn't solely based on aesthetics. Seiko explains that it used as a starting point the design of a model launched in 1976, practically at the same time as the release of the Jaws. The SRPL81 thus features an imposing 45mm diameter steel case, 13.2mm thick and 47.7mm lug to lug. The stated weight is 128 grams. The rounded, protective design of the case follows a well-established tradition of Seiko dive watches, with a crown positioned at 4 o'clock and seamlessly integrated into the case. The watch comes on a silicone strap with a 22mm lug width.
A true Prospex water-resistant to 200 meters: the Seiko Prospex SRPL81 Jaws 50th Anniversary Limited Edition
The cinematic reference doesn't prevent Seiko from maintaining the expected features of a watch belonging to its Prospex Sea range. The SRPL81 is water-resistant to 200 meters and features a screw-down crown and case back. Its unidirectional rotating bezel uses a ceramic insert. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface and a magnifying lens over the date window. LumiBrite is applied to the hands, hour markers, and bezel to ensure legibility in the dark. The stated magnetic resistance is 4,800 A/m.
The 4R36 automatic caliber inside
Seiko equips this anniversary edition with its 4R36 automatic caliber, a movement widely used in its accessible mechanical collections. It also features manual winding and a stop-seconds function when setting the time. Its power reserve is advertised at approximately 41 hours, and the movement has 24 jewels. The calendar displays both the day of the week and the date. Therefore, this is not a new movement developed specifically for this edition. The appeal of the SRPL81 lies primarily in its design and the connection it draws between the history of Seiko dive watches and the world of Jaws.
The Orca and the shark appear on the case back
The case back allows Seiko to more directly reference the film. It features a design combining the Orca, the boat used by Brody, Hooper, and Quint to search for the shark, and a fin emerging from the water. The inscriptions "JAWS 50th" and "LIMITED EDITION" accompany this illustration. Each watch also receives its own unique serial number. The presentation is also specific to this edition. Seiko supplies the watch in an anniversary box, with the image from the film reproduced on the inner cushion.
5,000 pieces for Jaws' 50th anniversary
The Seiko Prospex SRPL81 Jaws 50th Anniversary Limited Edition is limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide. Seiko announced its launch in Japan for July 11, 2025, the year of the film's fiftieth anniversary. In the US market, Seiko currently lists the model at $795. Price and availability may naturally vary depending on the market and retailer. Beyond the usual logic of limited editions linked to cinema, the association here has a certain historical coherence. Jaws and the Seiko diver's watch that inspired this Prospex belong to practically the same era, while the sea is the natural territory of the collection. The SRPL81 particularly cleverly plays with one of the mechanisms that made the film famous: not immediately showing the shark. Fifty years after Spielberg used this constraint to build tension in his film, Seiko in turn conceals the predator beneath the surface — this time, that of a dial.
