Baltic Aquascaphe Bronze Dive Watch

Starting from 645 €

The Baltic Aquascaphe Bronze is a French dive watch that revives the codes of 1950s divers and transposes them into a living alloy. Its 39mm CuAl8 bronze case develops a patina over time and with handling, so no two examples ever age quite the same way. Offered in three dial versions, Brown, Blue Gilt and Black, it combines a bronze bezel, a double-domed sapphire crystal and 200 metres of water resistance. Powered by a Japanese automatic calibre and priced at 645 euros, it is aimed at fans of vintage divers, independent micro-brands and materials that tell a story on the wrist.

Baltic Aquascaphe Bronze dive watch

Baltic is an independent French brand founded in 2016 by Étienne Malec. He has said he discovered watchmaking in 2005, through the collection and the journal kept by his father, a photographer and collector. The brand's name refers to his family, originally from northern Poland. The business model relies on direct sales, with no intermediary: case components are mostly produced in Hong Kong, while assembly and regulation take place in France, in the watchmaking area near Besançon. The straps are also made in France. The brand has showrooms in Paris, London and New York.

The Aquascaphe is the house diver and the most recognisable line in the catalogue. It comes in several sub-families: Classic, MK2, Dual-Crown, GMT, Titanium and Bronze. The latter was introduced in 2020 with a sunray blue dial, before being joined in 2023 by a brown version identifiable by its black sapphire bezel insert with gilt markings and its graduated chocolate dial.

The design stance is deliberate: measured proportions, a domed crystal evoking period plexiglass, no date window, Arabic numerals placed at 12, 3, 6 and 9. There are also drilled lugs for easy strap changes, a screwed caseback engraved with a diver and a wave motif, and lateral crown guards. The appeal of CuAl8 bronze lies in how it behaves over time: this copper-aluminium alloy tarnishes without turning green like a classic copper-tin bronze, making each watch a gradually unique piece.

The Baltic Aquascaphe Bronze dive watch

The Aquascaphe Bronze follows the recipe of mid-century divers to the letter, without falling into pure copying. The case measures 39mm in diameter at the bezel, 47mm lug to lug, with a thickness of 13mm, reduced to 11mm once the height of the crystal is removed. These measured proportions explain the watch's comfort on wrists of varying sizes, including slimmer ones, a point on which contemporary divers are often more generous. The choice of CuAl8 bronze is the model's central argument. Case, bezel and crown are machined from this copper-aluminium alloy, known for its resistance to corrosion in marine environments and for its ability to develop a patina on contact with skin, water and air.

Unlike a traditional copper-tin bronze, it tarnishes without turning green, giving a more controlled evolution of tone. Each example therefore progressively differs from the next. The dial remains deliberately clean, with no date window, Arabic numerals at the four cardinal points and Super-LumiNova C1 lume. The double-domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective treatment brings the characteristic curve of period plexiglass while remaining scratch resistant. The bronze bezel, protected by lateral shoulders at the crown, rounds out this functional package.

Three dials for a vintage diver

The Aquascaphe Bronze comes in three versions, all priced at 645€. The first, named Brown, features a graduated brown dial and is distinguished from the other two by a black sapphire bezel insert with gilt markings, exclusive to this version. The second, Blue Gilt, has a sunray blue dial whose reflections shift depending on the angle of light. The third, Black, opts for a more understated, more contrasted glossy black dial. The Blue Gilt and Black versions keep a bezel made entirely of bronze, with no applied insert, which further accentuates the case's monolithic effect as the patina sets in.

On the wrist, the watch comes on an FKM vulcanised rubber Rubber Sport strap, black or blue depending on the version chosen, finished with a bronze buckle matching the case. Two lengths are available, Small and Medium, the latter suiting wrist sizes up to 20.5 cm. The 20mm lug width and drilled lugs make strap changes immediate, and the brand's entire strap catalogue remains compatible with the model. In terms of resistance, the 200m water resistance and the screw-down crown protected by lateral shoulders place this diver in genuinely aquatic use, well beyond simple swimming.

Baltic Aquascaphe Bronze dive watch: patina as a signature

A French diver inspired by the 1950s, the Baltic Aquascaphe Bronze combines a 39mm CuAl8 bronze case designed to patinate, a bronze bezel and a double-domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective treatment. Its date-free dial, finished with Super-LumiNova C1, comes in graduated brown, sunray blue or glossy black. The automatic Miyota 9039 calibre offers 42 hours of power reserve and a hacking seconds function. Water resistant to 200 metres with a screw-down crown, the watch comes on an FKM rubber strap with a bronze buckle and benefits from a 24-month warranty, for 645 euros.

01

Movement

The watch is powered by the Miyota 9039 calibre, a widely proven Japanese automatic movement, which the brand openly acknowledges rather than hiding behind a house name. It offers a 42-hour power reserve, enough to last a night off the wrist, and includes a hacking seconds function for precise time setting. Its construction features 24 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The absence of a date window reduces overall height and preserves the dial's symmetry.

Diameter and materials

The case measures 39mm in diameter at the bezel, 47mm lug to lug and 13mm thick, or 11mm without the crystal's height. Case, bezel and crown are made of CuAl8 bronze, a copper-aluminium alloy that develops a patina unique to each wearer. The double-domed sapphire crystal receives an internal anti-reflective treatment. The dial comes in graduated brown, sunray blue or glossy black, with Super-LumiNova C1 lume. Only the Brown version gets a black sapphire bezel insert with gilt markings.

03

Water resistance

The Aquascaphe Bronze offers 200m water resistance, or 20 ATM, a figure consistent with its diving vocation and amply sufficient for recreational diving as well as all surface water activities. Water resistance relies on a screw-down crown, flanked by lateral crown guards, and on a screwed caseback engraved with a diver and a wave motif. The bezel allows immersion time to be tracked, while Super-LumiNova C1 ensures legibility in dark water.

Accessories

The watch comes on an FKM vulcanised rubber Rubber Sport strap, available in black or blue depending on the version chosen, finished with a bronze buckle matching the case. Two lengths are offered, Small and Medium, the latter accommodating wrist sizes up to 20.5 cm. The 20mm lug width and drilled lugs allow quick changes, and the brand's entire strap catalogue remains compatible with this case. The exact contents of the packaging are not detailed by the brand.

Warranty

Each Aquascaphe Bronze comes with a 24-month warranty, counted from the order's shipping date. This coverage applies to defects found under normal use and expressly excludes damage resulting from abnormal use, lack of care, negligence, accident or failure to follow the brand's instructions. This duration fits within Baltic's direct sales model, with no intermediary between workshop and customer, allowing the brand to handle after-sales follow-up itself for every watch assembled near Besançon.
