Kelton Montre de plongée 1955 - 40 ATM
Starting from 419 €The Kelton Montre de plongée 1955 - 40 ATM is the most extreme piece in a collection that celebrates the year the French brand was born. Limited to 100 numbered pieces, it pairs a 39.5 mm stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal and 40 ATM water resistance, or 400 metres, a rare figure at this price point. Its Japanese automatic movement and minimalist dial, with Super-LumiNova on the hour markers and hands, make it a legible, honest diver, built for the water as much as for everyday wear. Offered with either a steel bracelet with a blue dial or a Tropic FKM strap in four colourways, it targets fans of accessible French tool watches.
Kelton 1955 - 40 ATM dive watch
Kelton was born in 1955 from the meeting of the American company Timex and Stéphane Boullier, then head of Vixa, a brand that equipped pilots of the French air force. Timex set one condition: create a genuinely French brand. The name came from the hotel “le Elton” where Boullier had stayed. The first assembly workshop opened on rue des Villas in Besançon, before a factory followed in 1962. By the early 1970s, Kelton employed 3,000 staff and sold nearly four million watches a year, carried by a slogan that stuck in the collective memory: “Vous vous changez, changez de Kelton”.
The quartz crisis brought this industrial adventure to an end, before the brand was relaunched in 2016 by the AsConseil group, with assembly kept in France. The 1955 collection pays tribute to that founding year. Kelton presents it as a series of editions limited to 100 numbered pieces of automatic dive watches, with screw-down crown, sapphire crystal and Superluminova, of minimalist design, rated to withstand depths from 100 to 400 metres. The range spans 10, 20, 30 and 40 ATM, joined by a 1955 Carbone 20 ATM in forged carbon and by Mini 20 ATM models.
The 30 ATM has served as the vehicle for a partnership benefiting the Fondation de la Mer. The 40 ATM sits at the top of the range. The brand justifies its 400 metres by pointing to the mesopelagic zone, between 200 and 1,000 metres, where more than 99% of light rays are absorbed, which explains the care given to the luminescent treatment. It was worn by Stanislas Huille, French vice-champion in the 100m butterfly, at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka in July 2023.

The Kelton 1955 - 40 ATM dive watch
The 1955 - 40 ATM takes on a classic diver silhouette, deliberately stripped back so nothing interferes with reading the time. The stainless steel case measures 39.5 mm in diameter for 41 mm lug to lug, a size that stays well proportioned on most wrists despite the reinforced structure needed to withstand pressure. The 13 mm thickness reflects this beefed-up construction, without stopping the watch sliding under a cuff. The sapphire crystal protects a minimalist dial whose hour markers and hands are coated in Super-LumiNova, a choice consistent with the brand's talk of the mesopelagic zone, where more than 99% of light disappears. The screw-down crown locks the case and contributes to the water resistance Kelton claims across the whole collection.

Inside beats an automatic Miyota 8215 movement, wound by the motion of the wrist and offering a 42-hour power reserve. The 20 mm lug width opens the door to a wide range of aftermarket straps, extending the watch's versatility beyond the configurations offered by the brand. Designed and assembled in France, the 1955 claims a direct link to Kelton's history in Besançon, while fully embracing its purpose as a tool: legibility, robustness and simplicity of use take priority here over technical showmanship. It suits both a wetsuit and everyday wear equally well.
A numbered edition offered in five versions
The 40 ATM is a limited edition, numbered from 1 to 100. Kelton even invites buyers to request their preferred number via the contact form, a detail that gives each piece its own identity. This run of 100 numbered pieces comes with a unique pricing approach: all five versions share the same price, the same case architecture and the same 400-metre water resistance.

The first version is identified by its blue dial and stainless steel bracelet with a deployant clasp, the dressiest and heaviest in the series at a stated 153 grams. The other four are built around a black dial and a Tropic FKM strap, offered in navy, black, orange and white, with a pin buckle. The orange version is the only one to play up a sharp contrast against the dial; navy remains the most versatile, white the most summery. The Tropic, a classic revived from the sixties just like the brand itself, is made from FKM using a high-temperature, sulphur-based process that toughens the rubber without robbing it of its flexibility, while giving it a glossy sheen that silicone copies lack. This fitting noticeably lightens the watch, to 100 grams, and suits it better to swimming and water sports.
Kelton 1955 - 40 ATM dive watch: 400 metres on the wrist
The Kelton 1955 - 40 ATM brings together a 39.5 mm stainless steel case, a 13 mm thickness, a sapphire crystal and 40 ATM water resistance, or 400 metres. Its automatic Miyota 8215 movement offers a 42-hour power reserve, while the Super-LumiNova-treated hour markers and hands ensure legibility in the dark. Limited to 100 numbered pieces, it comes with either a steel bracelet with deployant clasp and blue dial, or a Tropic FKM strap in navy, black, orange or white paired with a black dial. Designed and assembled in France, it carries a two-year warranty.
Movement
Beneath the caseback beats a Miyota 8215 calibre, a Japanese automatic movement valued for its robustness and ease of servicing, often chosen by brands that favour reliability over sophistication. Kelton states a 42-hour power reserve, enough to leave the watch resting overnight without needing to reset the time. Winding happens through the natural motion of the wrist, with no battery or electronic upkeep. The watch is also designed and assembled in France, a commitment the brand claims across the entire 1955 collection.
Diameter and materials
The case measures 39.5 mm in diameter for 13 mm in thickness, with a 41 mm lug-to-lug height that keeps overhang on the wrist in check. It is machined from stainless steel and protected by a sapphire crystal. The dial varies by version: blue on the steel-bracelet model, black on the four Tropic versions. Hour markers and hands are coated in Super-LumiNova, essential at depth. One retailer mentions a brushed finish and a 7 mm screw-down crown stamped with an embossed K, a discreet house signature.
Water resistance
The 40 ATM lives up to its name: Kelton states 40 ATM water resistance, or 400 metres, a level far beyond the needs of recreational diving. The brand points to the mesopelagic zone, between 200 and 1,000 metres, to justify this margin and to underline the importance of Super-LumiNova where more than 99% of light is absorbed. The screw-down crown, highlighted across the collection, locks the case and rounds out this water resistance. The sapphire crystal withstands everyday wear as well as light knocks.
Accessories
Two fittings are offered for a 20 mm lug width. The first pairs a stainless steel bracelet with a deployant clasp, for a dressier look and a weight of 153 grams. The second is built around a Tropic FKM strap with pin buckle, offered in navy, black, orange and white, more supple and noticeably lighter at 100 grams. The official site does not detail the box contents, but Kelton offers gift packaging and a personalised note on request to accompany the watch.
Warranty
Kelton backs the 1955 - 40 ATM with a 2-year warranty from the date of purchase. It covers manufacturing defects but excludes the crystal, the battery and strap wear, items considered consumable or subject to normal use. After-sales service is handled by the Atelier Général Horloger, allowing for centralised tracking of repairs and servicing. For a mechanical diver intended for regular use in the water, this identified point of contact for servicing is a point worth not overlooking.
