Paulin Mara Dive Watch

Starting from 1.040 €

The Paulin Mara is the first dive watch from the Scottish house Paulin, based in Glasgow. Its name comes from Scottish Gaelic and means “of the sea.” It combines genuine technical capability, with 300 metres of water resistance, and an instantly recognisable graphic style inherited from the brand’s strongly identifiable designs. The 39.7mm cushion case in 316L stainless steel echoes the silhouette of the Modul line, softened and thickened to accommodate a domed sapphire rotating bezel. Offered in two lacquered dial versions, black or blue, and supplied with two interchangeable straps, it appeals to fans of tool watches designed differently, without giving up underwater usability.

Paulin Mara dive watch

Paulin was born in Glasgow in 2013, founded by three sisters, Charlotte, Eleanor and Elizabeth Paulin. The Scottish brand first made its name with quartz watches boasting a very bold graphic style, from the original S75 model to the Chronograph and Commuter lines. In 2016, Imogen Ayres, a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, joined the team, designed the house typeface Geo, and later became creative director. After the three founders departed in 2023, Paulin was taken over by anOrdain, led by Lewis Heath, and now shares a workshop, watchmakers and expertise with it in the south of Glasgow. The house works directly with its component manufacturers rather than through an assembler, publishes the list of its production partners, and assembles its watches in Glasgow, with a small portion made in Vancouver at Roldorf & Co.

Launched on 22 August 2025, the Mara is the brand’s very first dive watch and the first to receive a rotating bezel. Hodinkee reports that the project began with a conversation with journalist and diver Jason Heaton. The case takes the cushion shape of the Modul line, softened and thickened: it is the largest Paulin has ever made. The lacquered brass dial, manufactured in Germany, pairs hand-applied geometric hour markers in relief with numerals in the Wim typeface designed by Imogen Ayres and a lollipop seconds hand with a coloured tip, the hour hand echoing the shape of the “i” in the logo. Production is not limited, but deliberately kept small. In October 2026, a 250-piece Mara Limited Edition for Hodinkee offered a more classic take on the model, distinct from the ongoing black and blue series.

The Scottish diver Paulin Mara

Paulin’s first dive watch, the Mara applies the house’s graphic vocabulary to a construction built for the water. The cushion case in 316L stainless steel measures 39.7mm in diameter, a size that remains versatile for most wrists. The 48mm lug-to-lug, however, calls for a certain wrist width, and the thickness climbs to 13.5mm including the crystal, against 10.8mm without it: the difference comes from the heavily domed sapphire that crowns the dial. This crystal, treated with three layers of anti-reflective coating, limits stray glare both on the surface and underwater, which directly benefits the legibility of an already highly contrasted dial.

The announced weight of 74g remains modest and adds to comfort, all the more so since the two straps supplied with the watch are supple and light. Water resistance reaches 300m / 30 ATM, a level well beyond the needs of recreational diving and one that places the Mara firmly among genuine tool watches. The screw-down crown and closed caseback preserve the case’s integrity, while the rotating bezel gives the brand a function it had never offered before. Assembled in Glasgow and priced around €1,040, the Mara competes with divers fitted with Swiss movements in this price range, with a visual identity noticeably sharper than the category average.

Black or blue lacquered dial and dual strap

The Mara comes in two versions. The Mara Black features a black lacquered dial and a grey sapphire bezel, the Mara Blue a blue lacquered dial and a matching bezel. Both are offered at the same price and supplied with straps in the corresponding colour. The dial, in lacquer and Super-LumiNova on brass, rests on geometric hour markers, triangles, squares and circles, hand-applied in relief, on a clean minute track and on numerals in the house Wim typeface. The lollipop seconds hand with a contrasting tip completes this playful read, true to the Scottish studio’s spirit.

The bezel is a domed sapphire disc that overhangs the case and turns unidirectionally across 120 clicks; the lume is printed on the back of the sapphire to protect it from wear, and the overhang makes it easier to grip with gloves on. Inside beats the La Joux-Perret G101 calibre, a Swiss automatic offering 68 hours of power reserve, enough to let the watch rest all weekend without winding. On the portability side, each example comes with two 20mm straps: an injection-moulded rubber one with house markings, and a fabric model made from recycled fishing nets, lined with Italian Alcantara. The whole set arrives in a cork presentation box, in keeping with the brand’s plastic-free packaging approach.

Paulin Mara dive watch: graphic clarity and 300 metres

The Paulin Mara brings together a 39.7mm cushion case in 316L stainless steel, a thickness of 13.5mm including crystal, and a 48mm lug-to-lug. Its 300m / 30 ATM water resistance relies on a screw-down crown and closed caseback, while the unidirectional 120-click bezel, in overhanging domed sapphire, carries Super-LumiNova printed on the reverse. The double domed sapphire crystal receives three layers of anti-reflective coating. The Swiss automatic La Joux-Perret G101 calibre drives a black or blue lacquered dial. Two 20mm straps, rubber and recycled fabric, are supplied, along with a 24-month warranty.

01

Movement

The Mara is powered by the La Joux-Perret G101 calibre, a Swiss automatic movement whose architecture follows that of the ETA 2824, finished with care. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, a high frequency that favours accuracy and the smoothness of the seconds hand sweep. The 68-hour power reserve comfortably exceeds the norm for this category and lets the watch rest all weekend without needing to reset the time. The closed caseback conceals it entirely, benefiting the case’s robustness.

Diameter and materials

The cushion case in 316L stainless steel measures 39.7mm in diameter for a 48mm lug-to-lug. Its thickness reaches 13.5mm including the crystal, and only 10.8mm without the heavily domed sapphire that protects the dial. This double domed sapphire crystal receives three layers of anti-reflective treatment. The dial, in lacquer and Super-LumiNova on brass, comes in black on the Mara Black and blue on the Mara Blue, each version fitted with a matching sapphire bezel, grey or blue, that overhangs the case.

03

Water resistance

The Mara is rated to 300m / 30 ATM water resistance, a figure well beyond the needs of recreational diving as well as all nautical uses. This resistance relies on a screw-down crown and closed caseback, which lock the steel case. The unidirectional 120-click bezel, in overhanging domed sapphire, is easy to handle with gloves on and allows immersion time to be tracked. Its Super-LumiNova is printed on the reverse of the sapphire, shielded from rubbing, just as the luminescent dial ensures clear night reading.

Accessories

Each Mara comes with two 20mm straps, matched to the dial colour. The first is an injection-moulded rubber strap with the brand’s own markings, built for water and sporting use. The second is a fabric strap made from recycled fishing nets, lined with Italian Alcantara for comfort in daily wear. The whole set is presented in a cork presentation box made in Portugal, in keeping with Paulin’s plastic-free packaging policy. A single watch thus covers two different registers of use.

05

Warranty

Paulin covers the Mara with a 24-month warranty, stated directly in the model’s official specification table. This duration matches the market standard for a mechanical diver in this price range. As the watch is assembled in Glasgow, within a workshop shared with anOrdain, after-sales support remains in the hands of the house and its watchmakers. Orders shipped outside the United Kingdom may also be subject to customs duties and taxes in the destination country.
