MTM Special Ops Cobra 47mm: a titanium chronograph renewed and offered in three finishes

31.10.2026

At MTM Special Ops, the Cobra name is nothing new, but the current generation of the Cobra 47mm marks a clear renewal. Launched online in late December 2024 by the Los Angeles brand, it combines a 47mm grade 2 titanium case, a Ronda 3540.D Swiss quartz chronograph movement, 200 metres of water resistance and a dual bezel system, outer and inner. This chronograph is not a single model: it comes in three case finishes, black DLC, sandblasted grey and brushed silver, with several dial and strap options. Each example is numbered and assembled according to the buyer's choices. Depending on the configuration chosen, it is priced from $1,520 to $2,080.

MTM Special Ops, a militarily inspired watchmaker based in Los Angeles

The Cobra 47mm belongs to MTM Watch's Special Ops collection, an American brand that claims more than three decades of existence. It says it was founded by a former serviceman and designs and assembles its watches at its headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, at 1225 South Grand Avenue. This local production holds a central place in its messaging. MTM also states that it designs its models to meet or exceed US military standards, without specifying which specification is meant. The Cobra fits this orientation: although some commercial descriptions present it as a pilot's watch, the brand recommends it first and foremost to those operating in the field.

A Cobra that does not date from 2024

The official product page presents the Black Cobra 47 as a new limited edition, recently added to the collection. That description deserves some nuance. As early as February 2017, a watch blog tested an MTM Cobra available in 44mm and 47.5mm, sold for around $1,500. It already featured a black DLC-treated titanium case, a notched compass bezel, 200 metres of water resistance and numbered watches. That model stood out for a slide rule chapter ring graduated in NAUT, STAT and KM, a crown housed under a screw-down cap in the style of a canteen, and above all a Japanese quartz movement fitted with an alarm. The current Cobra 47 therefore extends an existing lineage rather than introducing a new model.

A Swiss movement in place of the alarm

The product pages of the current generation are dated 29 December 2024. The clearest change concerns the movement: the Japanese calibre gives way to a Ronda 3540.D Swiss quartz chronograph. This shift had already begun earlier, since in 2023 a reader of the same blog noted that recent Cobra 47 models had lost the alarm and the second time zone hand. The version presented today focuses on timing, the date and the dual bezel. As for the limited edition, MTM gives no production figure: the mention refers to the individual numbering of each watch, not to a closed series announced in advance.

The largest Cobra the brand makes

With its 47mm case, this model is presented by MTM as the largest Cobra it makes. For slimmer wrists, the brand offers a Cobra 44, which carries over the same design and the same dual bezel in a smaller format. The choice between the two therefore comes down mainly to wrist size and a preference for a more or less imposing watch, the underlying philosophy remaining identical. This coexistence of two sizes is nothing new: the 2017 Cobra was already offered in these two sizes, with 47.5mm at the time instead of today's 47mm.

A grade 2 titanium case shared across all versions

Whichever finish is chosen, the Cobra 47 rests on the same technical base. The case is machined from solid grade 2 titanium and measures 47mm in diameter excluding the crown, with a thickness of 15.5mm. MTM states a weight of around 5 ounces, or nearly 140g. The sapphire crystal receives an anti-reflective and scratch-resistant treatment, complemented by a UV filter. Water resistance reaches 200 metres, or 660 feet, with a screw-down, lockable crown. A lithium battery offers a four to five year lifespan according to the manufacturer.

Two bezels and a chronograph accurate to a hundredth of a second

The Cobra is recognisable by its dual bezel system. On the outside, a unidirectional notched bezel; on the inside, a second bezel that rotates in both directions and is operated by a pusher. According to MTM, this solution allows elapsed time to be tracked without compromising the case's water resistance. The other pushers operate the chronograph: start, stop and reset. The Ronda 3540.D measures durations up to 1 hour 59 minutes 59.99 seconds. The brass dial, described by the brand as a nautical compass dial, carries two sub-dials and a date window, with the hour markers and hands coated in Super-LumiNova.

Black, Grey or Silver: three finishes and a configurator

The Cobra 47 comes in three case finishes. The Silver Cobra, in brushed titanium, is the most accessible, from $1,520 to $1,670 depending on configuration. The Grey Cobra, in grey sandblasted titanium, is listed from $1,585 to $1,735; its reference CGBDNYGNMTM, with a black dial, costs $1,585. The Black Cobra, with a black DLC-treated case, sits at the top of the range, from $1,865 to $2,080. Its reference CBBDBV1MTM is offered at $1,865, while the CBBDTITMTM, named Black Lumi Cobra 47 and paired with a titanium bracelet, reaches $2,080. The collection included 32 references in stock at the time of writing. A bespoke configurator, from $1,520 to $2,080, lets buyers choose the finish, dial colour and a titanium, rubber, nylon or leather strap. Each watch is delivered in a waterproof case called the Barracuda, with a three year limited warranty reserved for the original purchaser.

An official product page to read carefully

MTM's documentation contains a few inconsistencies worth knowing about. On the Black Cobra 47 product page, the technical table lists a 44mm diameter even though the stated case size is 47mm, likely an error carried over from the smaller model. The collection's description also refers to solid stainless steel, whereas every detailed product page mentions grade 2 titanium. These discrepancies suggest relying on each reference's individual specifications rather than the general presentation text.

MTM Cobra 47mm: a field chronograph built to order

The Cobra 47mm shows rather well how an independent brand keeps a model alive over time. Rather than launching something entirely new, MTM evolves a name it has used for years, changes the movement, drops the alarm and retains what defines the model's identity: titanium, the dual bezel, 200 metres of water resistance and the numbering of each example. Made-to-order assembly at its Los Angeles workshop extends this logic, with each buyer putting together their own version from a common base. The Black Cobra 47mm was in fact selected by Bless This Stuff in its guide to microbrands and independent watchmakers, a selection MTM notes was not sponsored. For the military watch enthusiast, the Cobra is a reminder that a wrist tool can still be built to order, tailored as closely as possible to the person who will wear it.
