Edox Neptunian Automatic: a dive watch with professional specifications
In the world of dive watches, robustness, legibility and pressure resistance have historically been essential criteria. Although Edox does not present the Neptunian Automatic 80120-3BUM-BUF as a military watch, it incorporates several features associated with tool watches: a robust steel construction, a unidirectional bezel, strong luminescence and, above all, water resistance rated to 1,000 metres. With its blue dial and metal bracelet, this Swiss dive watch also retains a sufficiently classic aesthetic to extend beyond underwater use. The model belongs to Edox’s Neptunian collection and is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement. It is available from €1,275.
A dive watch water-resistant to 1,000 metres
The most striking feature of the Edox Neptunian is its water resistance to 1,000 metres, or 100 ATM. This rating immediately places the model in the category of dive watches designed to withstand extremely high pressure. To achieve this level, Edox uses a stainless-steel case measuring 44 mm in diameter and approximately 15.6 mm thick. The crown is screw-down and features a double-gasket system. The watch is also equipped with a helium valve, a feature associated with saturation diving that allows helium accumulated inside the case to escape during decompression phases. This construction positions the Neptunian closer to a specialised diving instrument than to a simple sports watch inspired by the marine world.
Ceramic bezel and blue dial
The case is topped by a unidirectional rotating bezel with a blue ceramic insert. Its one-way rotation is a characteristic feature of dive watches: it allows elapsed time to be measured while reducing the risk of an accidental adjustment indicating an artificially longer remaining time. The blue colour continues onto the dial, while the hour markers and hands feature a luminescent treatment to maintain legibility as ambient light decreases. Some documentation relating to this reference specifies the use of Super-LumiNova Grade X1. The display remains deliberately straightforward. Three hands occupy the centre of the dial, while a date window is positioned at 3 o’clock. The crystal is made of scratch-resistant sapphire, with an anti-reflective treatment according to documentation relating to the reference.

A Swiss Edox 80 automatic calibre
The Neptunian 80120-3BUM-BUF is a mechanical watch. It is powered by the Edox 80 calibre, based on the Swiss Sellita SW200 movement. This automatic movement provides hours, minutes, seconds and date functions. Its power reserve is rated at approximately 38 hours. The movement can also be wound manually and features a stop-seconds function when setting the time, according to the specifications published for this reference. Edox is therefore not pursuing horological complexity here. The architecture remains consistent with that of a tool watch: a conventional display, date function and proven automatic movement.
A construction designed for demanding environments
With a diameter of 44 mm and a thickness of nearly 16 mm, the Neptunian has substantial dimensions. These are partly explained by the requirements associated with its level of water resistance. The bracelet is also made of stainless steel. It features a folding clasp and an extension designed to make the watch easier to wear over diving equipment. Neptune and his trident appear on the caseback, a direct reference to the name of the collection and its maritime purpose.
A dive watch that goes beyond diving
Despite specifications geared towards great depths, Edox has opted for a relatively traditional combination of steel and blue. The ceramic bezel adds a more contemporary finish, while the metal bracelet visually distances the watch from the strictly utilitarian appearance of some professional dive watches. The trade-off lies in its size. At 44 mm in diameter, the Neptunian has a substantial presence on the wrist. It is a deliberate choice that reflects its technical architecture and positioning as a high-pressure dive watch. The Neptunian Automatic 80120-3BUM-BUF therefore brings together two worlds. It retains the aesthetics of a Swiss watch suitable for everyday wear while offering features generally associated with specialised diving instruments.
Edox Neptunian Automatic: a Swiss tool watch built for the depths
The Neptunian Automatic 80120-3BUM-BUF stands out primarily for its water resistance to 1,000 metres and equipment consistent with this purpose: a helium valve, unidirectional ceramic bezel, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal and luminescent display. Its Edox 80 automatic calibre, based on the Sellita SW200, completes a deliberately functional configuration. In the documented sense of the term, it is not a military dive watch. It does, however, represent a modern interpretation of the diving tool watch, with several technical features corresponding to the qualities historically sought for use in demanding environments.
